May

A May Birthday in a Winter Wonderland

Hello everyone! So this past day I celebrated my 19th birthday. My date of birth being May 4th, some years I am lucky enough to awake to birds singing and sunshine. Today, however, was not one of those years. That’s right, there was a full on blizzard in Edmonton today (see post below). It was awful. The heavy white stuff came down hard all morning and early afternoon, and unlike most of Edmonton’s freak spring blizzards, it did not melt.

The weather did not change the pre-planned birthday menu, though. That’s right, we ate like the sun was shining anyways. A nice, light, fresh spring-ish meal.

Tonight I helped to make a favorite dish of mine that I don’t get to savour often, seared ahi tuna with roasted asparagus and basmati rice. This dinner is simple, flavorful and luxurious. Mmm.

I really don’t have much of a recipe for you for this meal even because all you really have to do is sear the tamari and sesame doused ahi steaks, roast some asparagus with olive oil, salt and pepper, and make some rice (and I know you don’t need help with either of those)! See? Simple!

I absolutely love the silky, smooth texture of the tuna…it really is worth it’s hefty price tag (every once and a while).

I dotted my tuna with a bit of wasabi mayonnaise…absolutely delicious! Despite the weather, this dinner made me feel as if it really was the beginning of May. It was a perfect birthday din!

After supper we of course had to have some cake! For the past couple of years I’ve made my own birthday cakes (kind of sad…I know…but I like it, I swear). This year, though, my Mom made me a cake! It wasn’t just any old cake either, she made my Grandma’s special banana chocolate cake that she used to make for every single family member on their birthday! I hadn’t had it in so long. It was incredible, just as I remembered it to be. Thanks Mom!

And that was my birthday dinner. I’m so excited about this new blog and all the new things that will come for Mariel’s Noms along with it! I’ve got some great recipes to put up, and great new ones to try (as I did receive quite a few cookbooks as presents this year). Hope you all like the new set-up!

xoxo
